  • Professional crew
  • From 10 to 20 guests

The classic sailboat Hygie is the traditional yacht of our fleet. Stepping aboard Hygie means sailing on a piece of history. This 1930 classic sailboat, a wooden Marconi ketch of about 24 metres, has kept all the charm of pre-war yachts: varnished superstructures, a teak deck, a wheel and a brass binnacle. For a private boat trip in Marseille like no other, she is the boat for great occasions.

Departing from L’Estaque, the crew sets course for the Frioul, the Côte Bleue or the calanques, hoists the sails and chooses the most sheltered anchorage of the day. Your guests enjoy the deck, swimming and lunch served at the large wooden table, facing the cliffs.

Classic sailboat Hygie specifications

The classic sailboat Hygie is not a production boat: every element of her deck, masts and interior was designed at a time when yachts were built to last. Her fine lines and wooden hull give her a gentle motion in the swell, much appreciated by guests discovering sailing. Under sail, the classic sailboat Hygie glides along without engine noise, and that is often the favourite moment of the day.

On board, space is generous: the clear deck lets everyone find their spot, in the sun at the bow or in the shade of the awnings around the table. The saloon, all woodwork, offers shelter when the wind is cool and serves as a dining room on dinner evenings. The four double cabins, each with its own shower room, make it possible to extend the adventure over several days, from the Frioul to the calanques of Cassis.

The professional crew of the classic sailboat Hygie takes care of sailing, safety and service on board. They know the local anchorages, the rules of the Calanques National Park and the best spots to watch the sun set over the bay. All you have to do is enjoy.

Choosing well

Why choose the classic sailboat Hygie in Marseille

Real sailing

A ketch is sailed under canvas: your guests experience the manoeuvres, the sound of water on the hull and the gentle heel of a large sailboat.

A setting that leaves an impression

Varnished wood, brass, teak: a 1930 yacht gives a reception, a birthday or a seminar an elegance no modern boat can offer.

The whole group together

Up to 20 guests on the same deck: no need to split the group over several boats for swimming, drinks or the meal.

A crew that knows the coast

Every day, the crew chooses the most sheltered anchorage, between the Côte Bleue, the Frioul and the calanques, depending on the wind and the sea.

A typical day

A day on board the classic sailboat Hygie

Every trip is different: the crew adapts the programme to the day’s wind and sea to find the most beautiful sheltered anchorage. Here, as an example, is how a day at sea with a group goes.

Boarding

Welcome on the quay by the crew, introduction to the boat and safety instructions. Everyone discovers the teak deck, the varnished woodwork and the wheel.

Setting sail

Once out of port, the crew hoists the mainsail, the mizzen and the headsails. Guests who wish can take part in the manoeuvres or take the helm.

First anchorage

A stop in a turquoise cove in the Frioul, on the Côte Bleue or in the calanques: swimming, snorkelling, an outing in the tender or the wooden dinghy.

Lunch on deck

The large varnished wooden table is set on deck, in the shade of the awnings. A meal from our partner caterer or your own picnic.

Afternoon at anchor

Sunbathing on deck, a second swim, or a change of cove to discover another side of the coast.

Return under sail

The return to port is made under sail whenever possible, with the bay of Marseille, the Château d’If and Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde as a backdrop.

At the end of the day, the golden light on the cliffs and the sea makes Hygie an ideal setting for sunset drinks. In the evening, a candlelit dinner on deck is followed by a return by night, with Marseille lit up.

Traditional yachting

The charm of classic yachts in the Mediterranean

Yachts built before the Second World War have become rare. Wooden hulls, traditional rigs, brass fittings: each of these boats represents thousands of hours of work by shipwrights, varnishers and riggers. Those still sailing today owe their survival to passionate owners and constant maintenance.

In the Mediterranean, these sailboats meet every year at the great traditional regattas, where their sleek silhouettes turn heads. Sailing on a classic yacht means rediscovering a slower, more attentive way of experiencing the sea: you listen to the wind, trim the sails by hand, and enjoy a wide, clear deck rather than an enclosed lounge.

Ketch, yawl, schooner: how to tell them apart

The ketch, like Hygie, has two masts, the smaller of which, the mizzen, is at the stern but forward of the helm. The yawl also has two masts, but its even smaller mizzen is placed aft of the helm. Finally, the schooner has its tallest mast at the back. Hygie carries a Marconi rig, also called Bermudan: triangular sails hoisted along tall masts, which appeared in the 1920s and perform better upwind than the old gaff sails. These two-masted rigs divide the sail area into several sails that are easier to handle, an advantage on a large boat.

Preparing your trip

5 tips to make the most of Hygie

  • Book early for the high season. July, August and weekends in June go fast: allow one to two months ahead for an event.
  • Come barefoot or in light-soled shoes. The teak deck deserves respect: heels and black soles should be avoided.
  • Bring a warm layer. Even in summer, the sea breeze cools things down at the end of the day, especially at sunset.
  • Think about the meal in advance. Let us know when booking if you would like a caterer, any allergies and the number of vegetarians.
  • Stay flexible on the route. The crew chooses the anchorage according to the wind: it is the guarantee of a swim in calm water.

Where Hygie sails

The anchorages of the classic sailboat Hygie around Marseille

From L’Estaque, three great playgrounds are open to Hygie. Each morning, the crew chooses the one that will be most sheltered, depending on the direction and strength of the wind.

The Frioul islands

Half an hour’s sail away, the archipelago of Pomègues and Ratonneau offers coves with clear water, sheltered from the mistral when it blows moderately. You sail past the Château d’If, anchor facing the limestone cliffs and enjoy a swim in turquoise water, with the city of Marseille in the background.

The Côte Bleue

West of L’Estaque, the Côte Bleue unfolds its wilder calanques, pine forests and railway viaducts. The small coves of Méjean, Niolon or La Redonne are ideal for lunch at anchor away from the crowds. It is often the best choice with an east wind.

The calanques of Marseille

South of the bay, the calanques of the National Park offer the most spectacular scenery: white cliffs, deep water and steep-sided coves. The park strictly regulates sailing and anchoring to protect the posidonia seagrass: the crew knows the authorised areas and follows these rules on every trip.

Companies

A seminar or a reception on board a 1930 yacht

For a company, chartering a classic sailboat turns a business meeting into a shared memory. Hygie’s deck welcomes up to 20 guests for a reception, a management lunch or a team bonding moment. Handling the sails, shared with the crew, becomes a natural exercise in cooperation, with no artificial entertainment.

We organise the day from start to finish: a transfer from the Vieux-Port if needed, catering, drinks, a sound system for a speech and souvenir photos. Quotes are drawn up quickly, with an invoice in the company’s name. For larger groups, Hygie can sail with other boats from our fleet, meeting at the same anchorage for the meal.
