The crossing

Boat delivery to Corsica: the crossing from Marseille

Between Marseille and Corsica there is no possible stopover: the crossing is made in one go, day and night, over 168 to 244 route miles depending on the arrival port. It is genuine offshore sailing, which requires careful preparation.

The mistral calls the shots

The mistral comes down the Rhône valley and blows hard in the Gulf of Lion and as far as Corsica. It can carry the boat towards the island at a good speed, but it also raises a short, steep sea. The skipper leaves in a settled window, using Météo-France marine bulletins, and does not hesitate to wait rather than force it.

A non-stop crossing, tracked live

The route crosses the ferry traffic between the mainland and the island. Night watches are kept with AIS, radar if the boat has one and a constant visual lookout. You follow the boat’s position live and the skipper sends you an update at departure, during the crossing and on arrival.

When to cross?

Spring and autumn are the best windows: the boat is taken to Corsica before summer and brought back to the mainland at the end of the season for winter storage or antifouling. Summer is still possible, with berths harder to find.

The Strait of Bonifacio

To reach Bonifacio, Porto-Vecchio or Sardinia, the route follows the west coast and then enters the Strait of Bonifacio, a passage known for its currents and accelerated winds. The skipper relies on charts and SHOM notices to mariners and chooses the time of passage.

Destinations

Arrival ports in Corsica

Ajaccio

Capital of Corse-du-Sud and the most requested arrival: 186 route miles from Marseille. The Tino Rossi and Charles Ornano ports welcome boats of all sizes.

Calvi and L’Île-Rousse

The arrivals closest to the mainland, at 168 and 176 miles. The Balagne is the ideal gateway for a cruise in northern Corsica.

Bastia and Saint-Florent

Bastia is reached via Cap Corse, at 221 miles. Saint-Florent, at the head of its gulf, is a popular shelter 191 miles from Marseille.

Bonifacio, Propriano, Porto-Vecchio

The south of the island, from 196 to 244 miles: Propriano in the Gulf of Valinco, Bonifacio and its cliffs, Porto-Vecchio on the east side.

Not sure yet where the boat will arrive? Choose the port closest to your holiday destination or your boatyard: Ajaccio and Bastia are served by plane and ferry all year round, which also simplifies the skipper’s return and reduces actual costs. Calvi and Porto-Vecchio are well connected in season. We advise you on the best compromise between distance, access and berth availability.

Whatever the port, the Marseille to Corsica delivery ends with a handover alongside or at anchor, with a full report on the boat’s condition. In season, we help you book the arrival berth. Corsica is also an ideal base for then reaching Sardinia, the Maddalena archipelago or the Italian coast.

Your calendar

A season in Corsica, winter on the mainland

Many owners sail in Corsica in summer and bring the boat back to the mainland for winter. Delivery saves you two crossings of more than thirty hours and lets you arrive directly by plane or ferry to enjoy the island.

Out in spring, back in autumn

A Marseille – Ajaccio round trip represents 380 miles charged, i.e. €1,520 for the delivery, skipper included. Booked together, it allows us to fix both dates to suit the weather and your calendar.

Winter storage in Marseille

Brought back to Marseille, the boat is closer to boatyards and to your home for maintenance and antifouling. It can also work in spring and autumn thanks to our charter management, before returning to Corsica for the summer.

Safe route

The safe route between Marseille and Corsica

The distances on this page are not drawn as the crow flies. Each Marseille to Corsica delivery follows a safe route calculated on the relief of the seabed, using SHOM bathymetric models for the Gulf of Lion, the Côte d’Azur and Corsica. The route leaves Port Corbières through the Marseille harbour, passes off the Planier and heads for Corsica, crossing the Ligurian Sea over deep water.

What the route avoids

  • Beyond the 10-metre isobath: the route keeps at least 10 metres of water under the hull, except in harbour access channels.
  • At least 1 mile from coasts and islands, except when approaching the departure and arrival ports.
  • 3 miles off exposed headlands, where the sea builds and the current accelerates: Cap Corse for Bastia, Capo Pertusato and the Lavezzi for Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio.
  • Through recognised passages, more than 10 metres deep, when they shorten the route safely.

That is why Bastia, at 220.9 miles, is further than Bonifacio, at 217.6 miles: you have to round Cap Corse well offshore, where the sea quickly gets up in a westerly. Porto-Vecchio, at 243.9 miles, is reached through the Strait of Bonifacio via the recognised passage between the Lavezzi and Cavallo, always in more than 10 metres of water. Conversely, Calvi is the closest arrival, at 167.8 miles, because the route arrives directly from offshore, with no headland to round.

From route miles to price

To the route distance we add 2% for leaving port, the approach and berthing on arrival. From Marseille to Ajaccio: 186.4 route miles + 2% = 190 miles charged, i.e. €760 at the rate of €4 per mile, skipper included. From Marseille to Bonifacio: 222 miles charged, i.e. €888. The simulator and our port-to-port distance calculator use exactly the same figures, port by port.

Crossing time

The time at sea shown adds a 15% weather margin to the theoretical duration: for a sailboat at 6 knots, about 32 hours to Calvi and 36 hours to Ajaccio. This margin is used to plan watches and provisioning; it is never added to the price. On the day of departure, the skipper chooses the weather window, navigates on official charts and may change the route if the mistral or an easterly requires it.

Leaving from another mainland port

If your boat is already on the Côte d’Azur, the crossing is much shorter: 94.7 miles from Nice to Calvi, 104.8 miles from Saint-Tropez to Calvi, 151.3 miles from Toulon to Ajaccio. The simulator recalculates the route distance, the miles charged and the price for any of these departures.

FAQ

Marseille to Corsica delivery: your questions

How much does a Marseille to Corsica delivery cost?

The Marseille to Corsica delivery is charged at €4 per mile, Capitaine 200 professional skipper included, on the route distance plus 2% for approaches and harbour manoeuvres: €684 for Calvi, €760 for Ajaccio, €888 for Bonifacio, €900 for Bastia and €996 for Porto-Vecchio. Options and actual costs are added according to your choices, detailed in the simulator.

How long does the Marseille – Corsica crossing take?

About 30 to 42 hours at sea for a sailboat at 6 knots depending on the arrival port: about 29 hours to Calvi, 33 hours to Ajaccio and 38 hours to Bonifacio, not counting the weather margin. A fast motorboat crosses in less than a day.

Can you bring my boat back from Corsica to Marseille?

Yes, delivery works in both directions. The return to the mainland at the end of the season, for winter storage or antifouling, is one of our most frequent requests. On arrival in Marseille, the skipper’s return is a flat rate of €40.

Is the second crew member included in the price?

No, the price shown includes the skipper alone. The crossing is made at night: we recommend a second crew member for watches, offered as an option at €250 per day.

What is the best time to cross to Corsica?

Spring and autumn, avoiding mistral gales. The skipper chooses the weather window and may postpone departure if safety requires it.

Can we leave from a port other than Marseille?

Yes: Toulon, Hyères, Saint-Tropez, Nice or Monaco shorten the crossing to Corsica. The simulator recalculates the distance and the price per mile for your departure port.

Can we come aboard with the skipper?

Yes, the owner can take part in the delivery, depending on space on board and the watch system agreed with the skipper.

Does my insurance cover the delivery?

Most all-risks policies cover navigation with a professional skipper. Inform your insurer: we provide our Capitaine 200 qualification and professional liability insurance documents.

Do I need to book a berth in Corsica?

In July and August, yes: Corsican ports are often full. We help you book the arrival berth and check the reception conditions before departure.

Can a boat be delivered to Sardinia?

Yes. Olbia, in north-east Sardinia, is 261.0 route miles from Marseille, i.e. €1,064 for the delivery, skipper included. The passage through the Strait of Bonifacio is carefully prepared.

What happens if the weather does not allow departure?

The skipper chooses the weather window and may postpone departure if safety requires it, especially if a mistral is forecast. Any waiting days are provided for in the quote, so you stay in control of the budget.

How much does a Marseille – Corsica round trip cost?

Out in spring and back in autumn costs twice the price per mile: for example €1,520 for Marseille – Ajaccio – Marseille, skipper included, excluding options and actual costs. We can look at a rate for a round trip booked together.

Which boats do you deliver?

Monohull sailboats, catamarans and motorboats, from 5 to 30 metres. The simulator adapts the duration to your boat’s cruising speed.

Can I follow my boat during the crossing?

Yes: a live tracking link throughout the crossing, regular updates from the skipper and a delivery report on arrival.
